2025-08-18
Mary Lynn Johnson (nee Shamla) passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1943 to Evangeline and Frank Shamla, Mary was a devoted sister, a loving wife, a cherished friend, and a beloved member of her extended family.
She grew up in St. Louis Park, MN, where she lived for the majority of her life. After graduating from high school, Mary attended business school, where she mastered skills in typing, stenography, and office administration-skills that would open job opportunities for her.
In 1969, Mary was married to Rick Johnson, her loving husband of eight years, and though their time together was brief, their bond was deep and lasting. Mary saved and cherished every letter they exchanged. Following Rick's passing, Mary remained devoted to her parents and those around her, most especially her brother Tom, to whom she was a watchful, compassionate, and steadfast guardian throughout their lives. In her final days, seeing Tom one last time, and making sure there was a legacy of caregiving for him was one of the most important things she was able to do.
Family was the cornerstone of Mary's world. She spent many joyful summers at Lake Latoka in Alexandria MN with her extended family, enjoying cookouts, laughter, and the great outdoors. She also treasured holidays and special gatherings with family in Glencoe, MN, creating memories full of warmth and togetherness.
Mary had a deep love for animals and a lifelong appreciation for the companionship they offered. Her cats Fluffy and Frankie became cherished friends. She found joy in spending time with friends and family, always bringing her quick wit, kindness, and unmistakable spunk. Those who knew her will remember her as a generous friend, a devoted sister, and someone who could always find humor in life's ups and downs, even in her final days.
Mary is survived by her brother Tom, her extended family, and many dear friends who will miss her deeply.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church on August 28, 2025, with visitation at 10AM, and funeral mass at 11AM. Burial will be at St. Piux X Catholic Cemetery in Glencoe, where she will be laid to rest with her parents and family.
