First of all, thank you for sending this e-mail to me in order to respond for the upcoming 50 year reunion. This is the FIRST time in the past 50 years that I have been contacted for a reunion. Since I only attended SLP the second half of 11th grade and all of 12th, I figured I was lost in such a large graduating class!!

Comment:
After high school I attended the U of M majoring in Art, thank you to Wendell Heer's, art teacher at SLP. In the summer of "64" I thought it may be fun to apply for stewardess with Northwest Orient Airlines. I figured I would fly for the summer. In those days we were weighed before most trips, wore high heels, white gloves and a hat with our uniforms. When I retired 39 years later it was quite a bit different. Sandy Snead started a few months before me however we barely saw each other as she was in Seattle and I in Mpls. Most of our flights were international. Over the years I was married for a few years, have a great son, Zack, who also went to SLP. One of his best friends was Sam Hosakawa whose dad is David. We lived on Salem Ave. in SLP. Over the years I have been involved in General Aviation as well as commercial. My boy friend of 25 years lived in St. Louis. We had a farm and a couple of very old open cockpit biplanes that we flew throughout the midwest. He passed away 8 years ago. I still have the farm and my residence is in Golden Eagle IL which is a ferry boat ride across the Mississippi river from St. Charles Mo. I spend much of my time in Minnesota. My son provides a small apartment for me in his home which is across the alley from the Zen Center on Lake Calhoun. For the last four years I have been in a committed relationship with a fabulous guy who happens to be a pilot for Northwest which, unfortunately, is now called Delta. He lives in Eagan Mn. So I go back and forth. That is my story. I am happy. Don't know if I will be in town to party with you. I have barely seen anyone from high school. I am sure it will be a great time for all. Cheers!!! Mary Matzke Rethlake |

Comment: For the last several years, I have spent 7 mos. in Ca., and 5 mos. in Drummond, WI., north of Hayward, WI. It is the best of both worlds. I have 3 married children, and four grandchildren. They are a joy! I have been engaged to a wonderful man, Paul, for almost ten years. I spent many years in the thouroughbred horse industry. We bred and raced thoroughbreds, and my insurance agency insured valuable horses. It was a unique business. I am looking forward to seeing my old classmates.

Comment:
After graduating U of M I married my high school sweetheart, Al Ritchie, and began teaching in Hopkins. We have two daughters, who are now married, each with two kids. While raising the kids, I was active in the community, local politics and League of Women Voters activities, and especially with women’s issues. I became quite passionate about the issue of sex equity in high school sports. I met a number of female athletes and coaches, who helped me realize how the athletically talented girls of our era had been short-changed and under-supported. (Lord knows, I was not gifted in any sports activity, but now I understood how much richer their lives could have been had their skills been honored and nurtured.) Later I worked as a self-employed marketing communications producer, creating brochures, newsletters, videos, etc. After that I was the Communications Manager for a manufacturing firm, and lastly, a self-employed Organization Development consultant. Today, Al and I are enjoying retirement. We spend a fair amount of time at a local health club, trying to stay youthful. Hah! We also go to our Up North cabin. My mother, age 95, is in assisted living nearby. I am her chief financial planner, chauffer, spokesperson, etc. We also see our grandchildren frequently, although as they get older, that means attending their sports events mainly. I’m interested in the spiritual side of life and in meaningful conversations about the big cosmological questions. (i.e. Is there only one universe??)

What are your favorite activities?: | I like gardening (most of the time), biking on trails (but not roads,) kayaking around our lake (but only on calm days,) and snowshoeing through the woods up north. |
What countries have you visited and/or would you like to visit?: | Recent trip: our family had a wonderful time in Scotland last summer. |
What kind of music do you like today?: | Celtic folk, cajun, anything with a beat.I still think bob dylan wrote the best lyrics and Joan Baez had the most beautiful singing voice. |
How would your friends describe you today?: Thoughtful, curious, careful listener.
What would you change if you could?: I would like to be more adventuresome. My new five year plan: try sky diving, visit Macchu Pichu and learn to text fluently. |
